Submissions: Join the Weave

Thank you for your interest in contributing to Libri Lintei. We are always seeking fresh, rigorous, and imaginative voices to help us unravel and reweave the tapestry of the classical world.

Whether you are an established scholar, an emerging poet, or a student with a radical new take on an old myth, we want to hear from you. We value intellectual depth, stylistic elegance, and—above all—a passion for the “linen books” of our shared history.

I. What We Are Looking For We accept submissions across four distinct categories. Please review the specific requirements for each before sending your work.

  1. Scholarly Essays & “The Classical Core” We look for essays that offer deep dives into Greco-Roman antiquity or its subsequent reception. We prefer a “High-Public” style: writing that maintains academic integrity and citations but avoids unnecessary jargon and remains accessible to a curious, non-specialist audience.

Word Count: 2,000 – 5,000 words.

Topics: Philology, archaeology, ancient history, philosophy, and reception studies (e.g., “The Stoicism of Marcus Aurelius in Modern Leadership” or “Re-reading the Odyssey through a Post-Colonial Lens”).

  1. The Creative Muse (Poetry & Fiction) We seek creative work that breathes new life into ancient forms or figures. We are not looking for “toga and sandal” period pieces, but rather work that engages with the spirit or themes of the classics.

Poetry: Submit up to 5 poems in a single document. We are particularly fond of modern takes on classical meters (sapphics, hendecasyllabics) and “erasure” poetry using ancient texts.

Fiction/Flash Fiction: Up to 3,000 words. We love retellings, speculative “what-if” histories, and contemporary stories haunted by classical ghosts.

  1. The Critic’s Corner (Reviews) We publish reviews of new books (academic and trade), theatre productions, films, and museum exhibitions that relate to the classical world or the Middle Ages/Renaissance.

Word Count: 800 – 1,500 words.

Note: If you are a publisher or author wishing to send a review copy, please contact our Reviews Editor first at reviews@librilintei.com.

  1. Translations Translation is the lifeblood of Libri Lintei. We welcome new translations of Greek and Latin texts, as well as translations of later “Classics” (Dante, Racine, Petrarch, etc.).

Requirements: Please include the original source text alongside your translation.

Translators’ Note: We require a short (500-word) introduction explaining your stylistic choices and why this specific text needs a new translation today.

II. Formatting & Style Guidelines To ensure our editors can focus on your ideas rather than your formatting, please adhere to the following:

File Format: .docx or .pdf only.

Style Guide: We utilize the Chicago Manual of Style (17th Ed.) for citations. Please use footnotes rather than endnotes.

Anonymity: Our initial review process is double-blind. Please remove your name, institutional affiliation, and any identifying information from the manuscript itself.

Language: We primarily publish in English, but we encourage the inclusion of original Greek, Latin, or other source languages where appropriate. Please use a standard Unicode font (like Porson or Minion Pro) for Greek text.

III. How to Submit Please send your submission via email to submissions@librilintei.com with the following information:

Subject Line: [Category] – [Title of Work] – [Author Last Name]

Example: Essay – The Politics of the Loom – Smith

Cover Letter: In the body of the email, include a brief (100-word) bio, your current location, and any previous publications.

Attachments: Your anonymous manuscript.

Note on Simultaneous Submissions: We allow simultaneous submissions, but we ask that you notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. We aim to respond to all submissions within 6 to 8 weeks.

IV. Upcoming Themes & Deadlines While we accept general submissions year-round for The Scriptorium (our blog), our quarterly print-digital issues are themed.

Issue 14: “The Labyrinth” (Autumn 2026) We are looking for work exploring themes of architectural complexity, the Minotaur, lostness, ritual movement, and the “winding” nature of memory.

Submission Deadline: August 1, 2026.

Release Date: September 22, 2026.

Issue 15: “Exile and Return” (Winter 2026) An exploration of nostos, the wandering of Ovid, the displacement of the diaspora, and what it means to “go home” to a place that no longer exists.

Submission Deadline: November 1, 2026.

Release Date: December 21, 2026.

V. Rights & Compensation Rights: Libri Lintei acquires First North American Serial Rights (FNASR) and non-exclusive electronic archival rights. All other rights remain with the author. Following publication, you are free to reprint your work elsewhere, provided Libri Lintei is credited as the original venue.

Payment: At this time, we are a small, independent operation. We offer a modest honorarium of $50 for feature essays and original fiction, and $25 per poem, payable upon publication via PayPal or Venmo. All contributors receive a lifetime digital subscription to the magazine.
